EU extends mandate of its monitoring mission in Armenia for 2 years

YEREVAN. Jan 30 (Interfax) - The Council of the European Union has extended the mandate of the EU Mission in Armenia (EUMA) for two years until February 19, 2027, the mission said in a statement on social media.

The mandated tasks of the mission remain unchanged - EUMA is an unarmed civilian mission, it said.

"We are proud to stay committed to peace and stability in the region," the mission said.

The EU announced the launch of EUMA for two years on February 20, 2023. The mission's functions include conducting routine patrolling and reporting on the situation, contributing to stability in Armenia's border areas, and ensuring an environment conducive to normalization efforts between Armenia and Azerbaijan with the EU's support.

The Council of the EU decided to increase the number of EUMA's personnel in January 2024.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said in April that Yerevan was discussing an extension of the EU monitoring mission's mandate.
