Moldova announces tender to construct two thermal power plants for 81 mln euros using World Bank funds

CHISINAU. Jan 28 (Interfax) - Moldova's Energy Ministry is conducting an international tender to construct two high-performance thermal power plants in Chisinau with total electrical capacity of around 55 MW and thermal capacity of at least 43 Gcal/h, the ministry said.

Applications to participate in the tender are being accepted until February 21, 2025, the ministry said.

The cost of the project is 81 million euros. The power plants must be built within two years from the date of the contract entering into force. The World Bank is financing the construction of the thermal power plant as part of the project to improve the efficiency of the central heating system in Moldova (PIESACET-2).

The project envisages constructing modern facilities using state-of-the art and highly efficient flexible cogeneration technologies that should boost electricity output capacity and strengthen Moldova's energy security, according to the statement.

The Energy Ministry said that the government approved constructing the high-performance thermal power plants in 2023 to replace TPP-1 in Chisinau that was commissioned in 1951 and operates only during the heating season to cover the heat load to produce hot water.
