Ukrainian Railways raises train ticket prices to Poland, Hungary by 17%-37%

MOSCOW. Jan 28 (Interfax) - Ukrainian Railways will raise the ticket prices for international trains to Poland and Hungary by 17%-37% from February 1 due to losses from passenger traffic, which reached UAH 18 billion in 2024.

"Ukrainian Railways cuts discounts on international trains to Poland and Hungary from February 1. At the same time, the discount for trains to Austria and Moldova will not change," Ukrainian media quoted the Ukrainian Railways' press service as saying in a statement.

The ticket prices to Poland will increase by 20%-27% in the 1st class Intercity+ and sleeper cars and by 9%-27% in compartment cars due to the lower discount. The cost of travel in the most popular international trains: Kiev - Warsaw will increase by 37%, Kiev - Budapest by 17% in sleeper cars and by 21% in compartment cars, the statement said.

Tickets for the mentioned trains can be bought in the application and on the Ukrainian Railways' official website at the old prices with the current discount until January 31, 2025, inclusive, it said.

The discount for international train tickets was introduced in order to popularize them in coordination with the neighboring countries' railroads, it said.

"Ukrainian Railways previously agreed special discounts with neighboring countries' railroads to popularize its own international services. The company is now forced to gradually revise the size of these discounts, as due to higher prices for consumables and energy resources, losses from passenger traffic have grown markedly and reached UAH 18 billion last year," it said.
