Russian telescopes perform over 1,000 measurements of solar system's small bodies in 2024 - institute

MOSCOW. Jan 15 (Interfax) - Russian scientists discovered over 400 potentially dangerous asteroids and performed over 1,000 measurements of small celestial bodies in 2024, the Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics under the Russian Academy of Sciences said in a statement on Wednesday.

"In 2024, Russian telescopes performed 1,231 astro-photometric measurements [determination of the brightness of a celestial body] of small bodies in the solar system, including potentially dangerous asteroids," the statement, published on Telegram, said.

Measurements of 431 potentially dangerous asteroids and 15 comets were performed in 2024, it said.

On December 3, 2024, Roscosmos issued a warning of an approaching potentially dangerous asteroid. The asteroid zipped past the Earth over Siberia.
