Russia's Rosatom ready to offer VVER-1200 nuclear reactor units, wind energy, storage projects to Vietnam
HANOI. Jan 15 (Interfax) - Rosatom will offer construction of two VVER-1200 nuclear reactor units to Vietnam a s well as access to its non-nuclear competences, including cooperation in wind energy and power storage projects, Rosatom head Alexei Likhachev told journalists.
Vietnam has decided to revisit the Ninh Thuan 1 Nuclear Power Plant project it suspended in 2016, he said.
"We are starting to update the agreements reached a decade ago. Obviously, time has passed, and it is necessary to review a number of parameters. Still, two facts are invariable. First of all, we understand the technical concept and will offer construction of two VVER-1200 reactor units, which are the most advanced, cutting-edge facilities, only six of which, as you know, have been built in the world," Likhachev said. He added that Rosatom would offer construction of a two-unit power plant "for now."
"I should say that we traditionally offer our partners non-nuclear cooperation, everything related to research, broader competences, and use of a research reactor. Of course, our new traditional areas are related to composites, wind energy and power storage. All of that is on the negotiating table," Likhachev said.
Wind energy "is being discussed with the local electric company, EVN," he said. Everything will depend on the terms for buying electricity, "however, Vietnamese partners are interested in developing the electric power sector," he said.
Rosatom Energy Projects, Rosatom's entity promoting energy projects abroad, and Vietnam Electricity (EVN) signed a memorandum of understanding to develop cooperation in nuclear energy on Tuesday.
In June 2024, Rosatom and the Vietnamese Science and Technology Agency signed a memorandum scheduling the construction of a nuclear science and technology center in Vietnam.
Likhachev said back then that Moscow and Hanoi might resume negotiations on building a nuclear power plant in Vietnam.
