Russia increases electricity consumption 3.1% in 2024

MOSCOW. Jan 14 (Interfax) - Russia increased electricity consumption 3.1% year-on-year to nearly 1.192 trillion kWh in 2024, System Operator CEO Fyodor Opadchy told reporters.

A similar increase was recorded directly in the unified energy system of Russia, where consumption totaled 1.174 trillion kWh.

Generation increased 2.9%, according to the materials.

"Our electricity consumption grew significantly last year. The absolute figure is 3.1%," he said, noting that growth stood at 2.8% if the additional day of the leap year is excluded.

This is partly related to air temperature, but there has been growth even without this factor, Opadchy said. "If we adjust the figures to the average temperature [i.e., exclude the temperature factor], they show that there is growth in consumption and that it's continuing," he said.

Regarding electricity generation, according to the operator's materials, thermal power plants increased production by 3.6% and hydroelectric power plants increased it by 4.9%. Nuclear power plants reduced production by 0.9%, the System Operator said.

The installed capacity of power plants in Russia as of the beginning of this year stands at nearly 269.893 GW.
