European Commission to pay Ukraine 3 bln euros under G7 initiatives on loans for Kiev

BRUSSELS. Jan 10 (Interfax) - European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced the transfer of the first 3-billion-euro tranche to Ukraine on Friday under EU commitments as part of the G7 initiative on macro-financial aid for Kiev.

"Today, we deliver 3 billion euros to Ukraine, the first payment of the EU part of the G7 loan," von der Leyen said on social media.

"Ukraine can keep counting on its friends and partners," she said.

The participants in the G7 summit in Italy in June 2024 pledged to provide Ukraine with a loan of 50 billion euros backed by profits from immobilized Russian assets.

On December 19, the European Commission announced its decision to make an 18.1-billion-euro macro-financial assistance loan available for Ukraine starting 2025, which is to be repaid by revenues from immobilized Russian assets.

As reported, the 18.1-billion-euro loan would be disbursed in tranches over the course of 2025, with the first tranche to be provided to Ukraine in early January.
