Repairs at Kazakhstan's Tengiz oil and gas field should be completed by mid-Jan - Energy Ministry
ASTANA. Jan 9 (Interfax) - Repairs at Tengiz, one of Kazakhstan's largest oil and gas fields, should be completed by mid-January, the Kazakh Energy Ministry told Interfax on January 5.
"According to the operator's information, the repairs would be completed by January 15," the ministry said.
Kazakh Energy Minister Almasadam Satkaliyev said earlier that the repairs were to be completed before the end of 2024.
Production at the Tengiz second-generation plant was partly suspended on October 26, 2024 to carry out repair work "on waste heat boiler E-401A of Unit 400." Localized corrosion damage and "steam leak to the process stream" was discovered during the equipment inspection. The Energy Ministry said initially that the repairs would be completed by November 23, 2024.
Tengiz, located in the Atyrau region in western Kazakhstan, is one of the country's largest oil fields, holding oil reserves of 3.1 billion tonnes. The field produced 14.4 million tonnes of oil (114.6 million barrels) in January-June 2024, a 3.4% decline compared to the same period in 2023.
Tengizchevroil LLP, the consortium operating the field, includes Chevron (50%), ExxonMobil Kazakhstan Ventures Inc. (25%), Kazakhstan's KazMunayGas (20%), and Lukoil (5%).
