Over 140 tonnes of polluted soil removed from coast in Sevastopol

SEVASTOPOL. Jan 9 (Interfax) - More than 140 tonnes of soil polluted with fuel oil have been removed from the coast in Sevastopol, the city's Governor Mikhail Razvozhayev said.

"Over the day, 14.4 tonnes of soil polluted with fuel oil were removed for disposal, and 140.7 tonnes since the cleanup effort began," Razvozhayev said on his Telegram channel on Wednesday.

Volgoneft 212 and Volgoneft 239 tankers carrying fuel oil wrecked in the Kerch Strait on December 15, 2024. Fuel spilled in the wreck zone, and petroleum products were washed ashore. According to the latest updates from the Transport Ministry, four tanks with petroleum products were damaged in the accident, leaking around 2,400 tonnes of fuel oil into sea.

Fuel oil spots have been recorded on the shore in Sevastopol since January 3.

A regional emergency has been declared in the Krasnodar Territory, Crimea and Sevastopol, and a federal emergency is also in effect.
