Kazakh president, Qatari investors discuss major energy projects

ASTANA. Dec 9 (Interfax) - Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has met with Qatari investors on the Doha Forum sidelines to discuss major energy and telecommunication projects, the presidential press service said.

While meeting with Power International Holding owners Moutaz Al-Khayyat and Ramez Al-Khayyat participating in the construction of gas refineries in Kashagan, the second line of the Beineu-Bozoi-Shymkent gas pipeline, a new compressor station and the Aktobe-Kostanai trunk gas pipeline, Tokayev said those projects would contribute to the strengthening of Kazakhstan's energy security.

Board of Directors Chairman Moutaz Al-Khayyat shared plans for the implementation of agreements reached with Kazakhstan in regard to the investment projects. The company is also discussing construction of a steam gas turbine unit in the Kyzylorda region and laying inter-regional power lines. The Qatari company heads expressed an interest in joint projects in the field of artificial intelligence.

Tokayev reaffirmed the Kazakh government's intention to provide favorable terms to Qatari investors.

Additionally, Tokayev discussed prospects for renewable energy investments with Nebras Power Board of Directors Chairman Nasser al-Hajri.

Tokayev spoke about the recent conclusion of an agreement between Nebras Power and Samruk-Energo on building the 300MW Semipalatinsk HPP. He lauded the project's role in strengthening the long-term strategic partnership between Astana and Doha and confirmed the Kazakh government's readiness for its support.

He also said that Kazakhstan planned to increase the renewable energy share in its energy balance to 15% by 2030.

In turn, al-Hajri briefed Tokayev on main stages of the joint project and noted Kazakhstan's sizable potential for green energy.
