Russian Economic Development Ministry to present 2030 target greenhouse gas emission figures in Q1 2025

MOSCOW. Dec 6 (Interfax) - The Russian Economic Development Ministry intends to present target greenhouse gas emission figures for 2030 in Q1 2025, Economic Development Minister Maxim Reshetnikov said in an interview with Interfax.

"We are currently refining the target scenario of the low-carbon development strategy and the draft plan for its implementation. We are working with sectoral agencies to establish economically justified target greenhouse gas emission figures for 2030. We will be ready to present them in the first quarter of 2025," he said.

As reported, the adoption of the plan for implementing Russia's low-carbon development strategy through 2050 has been postponed several times. In 2022-2023, this was due to the need to reassess the availability of technologies and the cost of resources amid the sanctions that have been imposed. In 2024, the updated draft plan was again sent for revision, taking into account the results of the first phase of the Russian climate monitoring system project.

"Scientists have significantly revised the amount of greenhouse gas emissions both nationally and by sector. Among the key findings: Russia's net greenhouse gas emissions decreased by one third, reaching 813.2 million tonnes in 2022 compared to 2021. Of course, clarifying greenhouse gas emissions brings Russia closer to carbon neutrality. At the same time, it increases the variability of pathways and methods for decarbonizing our economy," Reshetnikov said.
