Europe's assistance to Ukraine proved insufficient - Borrell

BRUSSELS. Nov 25 (Interfax) - Despite the enormous support extended to Ukraine, the European Union has not managed to provide Kiev with sufficient resources in its confrontation with Russia, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said.

"We have continued our financial, humanitarian and military support for Ukraine. We have now committed 122 billion euros for this purpose, including 45 billion euros in military support. We have also just decided to use the revenues from frozen Russian assets to guarantee this aid to Ukraine for the future," Borrell said in a blog post on Monday, summing up the results of his term in office as EU foreign policy chief, which expires in November.

"But despite all that, we have not managed to provide Ukraine with sufficient resources to protect itself [...] The winter is going to be very harsh for Ukrainians, with massive power cuts. Nor have we managed to provide sufficient support to Ukraine, particularly on the ammunition side," he said.

What is now happening in Ukraine "is an existential threat to the European Union," he said. It could destroy "the entire rules-based world order that we have sought to promote globally," he said.

All this should prompt the Europeans themselves to take care of their own security, Borrell said.
