Russia's Togliattiazot shipped 30,000 tonnes of carbamide by river in 2024 season, will continue this in 2025

SAMARA. Nov 22 (Interfax) - PJSC Togliattiazot , which renewed shipments of carbamide via river transportation this year, shipped 30,000 tonnes of this product via river during the season, the company's press service said.

A total of six shipments via river were dispatched, with the final batch of carbamide for this year sent on a specialized vessel in November.

"Restored navigation has proved its effectiveness. Togliattiazot's growing product shipments (growth stood at 13% year-on-year in 10M 2024) require an expansion of logistical capabilities and new solutions. The experience gained allows the company to plan an increase in the fleet's shipments in 2025 in order to satisfy growing demand on the mineral fertilizer market," the head of Togliattiazot's commercial division Oleg Shakhvatov was quoted as saying.

Using the river route for shipping makes it possible to reduce delivery times for customers in Turkey and cut delivery costs, the company said.

The company carried out modernization and partial repairs of equipment at its port along with additional personnel training in order to renew river shipments, it said.

As reported, in 2024 Togliattiazot transported carbamide on river-sea class vessels with a capacity of around 5,000 tonnes. A ship's full load is equivalent to 250 shipments delivered by road. Togliattiazot explained the renewal of shipments by river in terms of growing consumer demand for mineral fertilizers.

In line with its approved development strategy for 2024-2035, Togliattiazot intends to increase ammonia production from 3.5 million tonnes to 4 million tonnes a year or 14% and carbamide production from 1.76 million tonnes to 3.9 million tonnes, or 2.2-fold.

Togliattiazot produced 1.64 million tonnes of carbamide in 2023, a 1.8-fold increase from 2022, and 1.601 million tonnes of ammonia, up 13.4%.

The company ships 74% of its products by rail, 17% via pipelines and 9% by road, according to its report for 2023. A terminal for handling ammonia at the Taman sea port is currently under construction.

Togliattiazot is one of the world's largest ammonia producers. Its production capacity is more than 3.5 million tonnes of ammonia and 1.75 million tonnes of carbamide a year.
