MOSCOW. Nov 15 (Interfax) - The Ukrainian Railways state-run company increased freight transportation 21.9% to 146.94 million tonnes in January-October 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.
"In January-October 2024, Ukrainian railways transported 146.94 million tonnes of freight, which is 26.4 million tonnes, or 21.9%, more than in the same period last year. In October, 15.06 million tonnes of freight were transported, which is 8.8% more than in September," Ukrainian media reported citing the Ukrainian Railways' memo drafted before a meeting of the Exporters' Office.
The company's export shipments grew 64.2% to 71.01 million tonnes in January-October 2024. Exports accounted for 48% of all shipments in this period, up from 36% in the same period in 2023, the memo said.
Grain accounted for the largest share of freight (40.6% or 28.85 million tonnes) transported by the Ukrainian Railways in January - October, followed by iron and manganese ore (38.9% or 27.67 million tonnes), ferrous metals (6.1% or 4.33 million tonnes), and construction materials (4.9% or 3.49 million tonnes), it said.
"The metallurgical and agrarian sectors retain their core status in Ukrainian exports in the current conditions. Sea routes remain a principal channel for increasing shipments of Ukrainian products to foreign markets," the memo said.
The current state of the energy sector influences the volume of freight transportation, it said.
As reported earlier, the Ukrainian Railways increased its freight transportation by nearly 25% since the start of 2024, while reducing it in September compared to August.
