Azerbaijan, IAEA to cooperate on research, nuclear energy projects
BAKU. Nov 14 (Interfax) - Azerbaijan and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) signed a memorandum of understanding to cooperate on energy planning within the context of the Paris Agreement on Wednesday, Azerbaijan's Energy Ministry said.
The memorandum was signed by Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov and IAEA Director Rafael Grossi at the United Nations COP29 climate conference.
Shahbazov said the document "reflects Azerbaijan intentions to further strengthen the country's ambitions in the area of the clean energy transition and the area of green energy."
"Cooperation within the context of the Atoms4NetZero initiative in the area of nuclear energy, including analysis of the potential of small modular reactors in the transition to clean energy, will give a new push to Azerbaijan's energy sector. The main goal of this memorandum is to carry out joint research and projects to develop nuclear energy. Our cooperation with the IAEA will support Azerbaijan's progress toward using nuclear energy in future and create an opportunity for the further diversification of the energy system," Shabazov said.
