Russia generates 85% clean energy in output balance - PM Mishustin
BAKU. Nov 13 (Interfax) - Russia has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by over 50% since 1990, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin said at a high-level meeting during the 29th UN Framework Convention on Climate Change COP29 in Baku.
"We plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. We are focusing on increasing energy efficiency, developing electric transport, and implementing modern solutions in agriculture and forestry. In Russia, 85% of the energy balance already comes from 'clean', low-emission generation. This is primarily gas, nuclear energy, and renewable energy sources," Mishustin said.
Mishustin also indicated Russia's actions to develop proprietary technologies and boost production capacity to decarbonize industries.
"We have one fifth of the global forest resources. The volume of absorption exceeds one billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per year," Mishustin said, bringing particular attention to utilizing natural resources in Russia.
Mishustin has called for a united effort to fight climate change, and he has identified four priority areas of cooperation, namely an agreement on a new collective goal for climate financing in the interests of developing countries; the inadmissibility of discrimination against technologies under the pretext of global warming; the creation of a unified system for assessing the quality of climate projects; and solidifying collaboration between scientific communities in order to reach efficient decisions on decarbonization and adaptation.
