Azerbaijan planning to build solar, wind, hydro power plants totaling 6 GW by 2030 - Aliyev

BAKU. Nov 13 (Interfax) - Azerbaijan is planning to build solar, wind and hydro power plants with a total capacity of around 6 GW by 2030, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said.

"We plan to build solar, wind and hydro power plants with a total capacity of around 6 GW by 2030. But that's not all our plans. We've signed contracts and memorandums of mutual understanding for renewable energy projects with a total capacity of 10 GW," Aliyev said on the sidelines of the COP29 climate conference in Baku on Tuesday.

Aliyev's statement was published on the president's website.

The technical potential of renewable energy sources is estimated at 135 GW on land and 157 GW on water, he said.

"Our green agenda encompasses various regions of Azerbaijan. The regions of Nakhichevan, Karabakh and East Zangezur have been declared green energy zones, which account for around a quarter of our territory," he said.

It would be unfair to call Azerbaijan an oil state, he said. "It is unfair when we are called an oil state [...] Today, Azerbaijan's share in global oil production is 0.7%, and it's 0.9% in global gas production [...] Azerbaijan's share of global gas emissions is just 0.1%," he said.

The Azerbaijani Energy Ministry said previously that it was working on implementing wind power projects with a total capacity of 28 GW with international energy companies and international financial institutions. "Our task is to raise the installed capacity of wind power to 30% of the energy system by 2030. However, bearing in mind the pace of green energy's development, this figure will rise to 32.6% by 2027, and to 35% by 2030," Deputy Azerbaijani Energy Minister Orhan Zeynalov said at the Caspian Energy Forum in September.

The current installed capacity for wind power generation in Azerbaijan is around 1,700 MW or 20.9% of the energy system's installed capacity.
