Azerbaijan, Armenia to continue peace treaty talks after climate conference in Baku - Aliyev
BAKU. Nov 11 (Interfax) - Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and German Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz have discussed the Armenian-Azerbaijani peace process and the upcoming COP29 climate conference in Baku by phone.
"The call was initiated by the German side," the Azerbaijani presidential press service said.
Germany supports the Azerbaijani-Armenian peace process and urges the sides to take bold steps in that direction, Scholz said.
Aliyev said, for his part, that Baku had initiated the conclusion of a peace treaty with Yerevan. He added that the Armenian constitution contained territorial claims against Azerbaijan. "The head of state underlined that a significant delay in Armenia's proposals on the document text had a negative effect on the process but, despite that fact, the sides were close to a final agreement on the document text and the negotiations would continue after the COP event," the press service said.
Scholz said he regretted that the current political situation in Germany prevented him from attending the COP29 summit in Azerbaijan [on November 12-13]. He said it was important to make the summit successful and added that Germany would support the achievement of the new financial target.
Aliyev said, in turn, that, as the COP29 chair, Azerbaijan seeks to build bridges between sides and provides a good venue for result-oriented discussions.
COP29 will take place in Baku on November 11-12.
