EU ambassador says Ukraine now closer to EU membership

MOSCOW. Nov 2 (Interfax) - Despite the crisis, Ukraine is continuing to successfully implement the reforms necessary for joining the European Union, EU Ambassador to Ukraine Katarina Mathernova said.

"Our latest report said that except one very specific sphere, Ukraine has made progress all across the board. There is no rollback anywhere," Ukrainian media quoted Mathernova as saying at the Kiev Security Forum for Youth.

Ukraine is much closer to EU membership now than a year ago, she said.

Progress is never linear, and Ukraine's firm determination, its commitment to joining the EU, and successful implementation of difficult and in some cases painful reforms is bringing the country closer to EU membership, she said.

"I have also seen reports from various organizations raising sensitive issues and, in particular, that of combating corruption. This process is still underway in Ukraine. I want to say: 'Continue this work,'" Mathernova said.
