Kazakhstan exploring possible establishment of int'l consortium for building NPP
ASTANA. Oct 31 (Interfax) - An international consortium may build the first nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said.
"Construction of Kazakhstan's first nuclear power plant was supported at a recent referendum as a long-term investment in our energy security. We are exploring the possible establishment of an international consortium to implement this project," Tokayev said at a meeting of the Foreign Investors' Council.
Kazakhstan has "a huge potential for developing the atomic energy industry, as a global leader in uranium mining with an almost full nuclear fuel cycle," he said.
On October 6, Kazakhstan held a referendum on building a nuclear power plant in the country. According to the final statement of the Central Elections Commission, Kazakh citizens approved the construction of a nuclear power plant.
