EU Political and Security Committee to meet to discuss situation in Georgia - Borrell

BRUSSELS. Oct 29 (Interfax) - The European Union is concerned about the situation in Georgia following the October 26 parliamentary election, and its Political and Security Committee is to convene to address the matter on Tuesday, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and European Commission Vice President Josep Borrell said.

"I have asked the Political and Security Committee to convene today for an urgent discussion on the difficult situation in Georgia. I have also put it on the agenda of the November Foreign Affairs Council," Borrell said in a statement on Tuesday.

"People of Georgia have been demonstrating for months their attachment to democratic values and their country advancing on the EU path," Borrell said.

"It is important that protests and government reaction to them remain peaceful," he said.

"Georgia is an EU candidate country and as such, it has to demonstrate its commitment to European values, starting with full transparency in the election process," Borrell said.

He urged the Georgian authorities to make sure that "a conducive environment [is] guaranteed for media, civil society and opposition, which make up for a pluralistic, democratic society."
