Armenia, U.S. cooperate in all directions of defense sphere, Armenia says

YEREVAN. Oct 28 (Interfax) - Armenia cooperates with the United States in all directions of the defense sphere, the Armenian Armed Forces' Chief of the General Staff Edvard Asryan said on Monday.

"Our cooperation is military, military-technical and in all directions of the defense sphere," Asryan said, when asked by journalists at what level Yerevan and Washington maintained their defense cooperation.

"Such things are not announced," Asryan said when asked if Armenia had any chance of acquiring weapons from the U.S.

Armenia's military leadership does not consider a threat of military escalation with Azerbaijan to be probable; such a scenario is not under consideration, he said.

"There is no danger of military escalation by Azerbaijan. The situation on the border is relatively stable," Asryan said.

"The General Staff is not currently considering a scenario which would lead to a war," Asryan said.

Armenia and Azerbaijan are preparing a meeting on the issue of captured and missing persons, Armenia's National Security Service director Armen Abazyan told journalists.

The meeting is likely to take place very soon, he said. "I cannot say on which dates, but quite possibly the meeting will take place in the very near future at the level of our commissions," Abazyan said.

There was no final decision yet as to the date and venue of the meeting, he said.
