Liberal Democratic Party wins majority of seats in Uzbek parliament - CEC

TASHKENT. Oct 28 (Interfax) - The Movement of Entrepreneurs and Businessmen - Uzbekistan Liberal Democratic Party won the majority of seats in the Legislative Chamber as a result of parliamentary elections, Uzbek Central Elections Commission (CEC) chair Zayniddin Nizamkhodjaev said at a press briefing in Tashkent on Monday.

"The vote resulted in the election of 64 deputies from the Movement of Entrepreneurs and Businessmen - Uzbekistan Liberal Democratic Party, 29 from the Democratic Party of Uzbekistan, 20 from the People's Democratic Party of Uzbekistan, 21 from the Social Democratic Party, and 16 from the Ecological Party of Uzbekistan," Nizamkhodjaev said.

He said that the Liberal Democratic Party and Democratic Party of Uzbekistan retained the majority of seats in the lower parliament chamber.

The Liberal Democratic Party had 53 seats, and Democratic Party of Uzbekistan had 36 in the previous parliament.

As reported, the voter turnout reached 74.72% (15,027,529) in the elections of the Legislative Chamber of the Uzbek parliament on Sunday.

The Legislative Chamber was elected by a mixed electoral system combining majoritarian and proportional representation for the first time. Voters elected 75 deputies in single-member constituencies and 75 by party tickets.

The Uzbek parliament is elected for five years. Powers of the Legislative Chamber elected in December 2019 will expire in the end of 2024.
