Turkmenistan aims to raise gas production from 80.6 bln bcm in 2023 to 116 bcm a year by 2029

ASHGABAT. Oct 24 (Interfax) - Turkmenistan is anticipating an increase in gas production to 116 billion cubic meters a year by 2029, head of the transport and gas supply department at the state company Turkmengaz Rustem Tekayev said.

"The development concept for the gas and oil sector was presented by the Turkmen government as part of the plan for the country's social and economic development in 2022-2028. It is planned that gas production will be raised to 116 billion cubic meters, with half of this assigned for export," Tekayev said during the 29th Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan 2024 international conference and exhibition.

To a large extent these plans are related to developing the Galkynysh gas field, with the second stage expected to provide an additional 20 billion cubic meters.

In March, Turkmen Deputy Prime Minister Batyr Amanov, who is in charge of the fuel and energy sector, said that Turkmengaz is working on increasing its production, including of sulfur-free gas. For its exploration, development test wells were drilled and commercial flows were obtained from them.

Turkmenistan produced 80.6 billion cubic meters of gas in 2023, up 2.9% from 2022.

The country currently exports natural gas to China, Russia, Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan with swap operations via Iran. It is currently building the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India gas pipeline and plans to establish supplies to Iraq and Turkey via Iran.

According to the Energy Institute's statistical review, Turkmenistan exported 39.5 billion cubic meters of gas in 2023.
