Ukrainian prosecutor general resigns over disability certificates scandal
MOSCOW. Oct 23 (Interfax) - Ukrainian Prosecutor General Andrei Kostin has said he is resigning from this post as he bears political responsibility for the situation around the issuance of disability certificates to prosecutors, Ukrainian media outlets said, citing Kostin's statement on social media.
"In my opinion, it is absolutely right to cancel not only all unlawful decisions on granting disability certificates, relevant pensions and other benefits, make clear-cut legislative and organizational changes, but there must also be personal liability," Kostin said.
"In this situation, I believe it is right to announce my resignation from the post of prosecutor general," he said.
On Tuesday evening, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky held a National Security and Defense Council meeting to address "the obviously immoral situation around the fake disabilities of government agencies' officials," Kostin said.
"Inspections are continuing at all levels of the state. Criminal investigations are in progress. Many shameful facts of abuse have also been exposed within Ukraine's prosecution service," he said.
