Cargo transportation by Ukrainian Railways up by 23.3% in Jan-Sept 2024

MOSCOW. Oct 10 (Interfax) - Cargo transportation by JSC Ukrainian Railways increased by nearly a quarter in January-September 2024, but declined in September compared to August, Ukrainian media cited the company as saying in its briefing note for an Office of Exporters meeting.

Ukrainian Railways transported 131.88 million tonnes of cargo in January-September 2024, or 23.3% more than in the same period of 2023. Meanwhile, cargo transportation dropped by 2.4% to 13.84 million tonnes in September 2024 month-on-month, the report said.

Exports by Ukrainian Railways rose 66.4% to 63.92 million tonnes in January-September 2024.

Exports consisted mostly of grain (25.78 million tonnes, or 40.3% of all exports), iron and manganese ore (25.19 million tonnes, 39.4%), ferrous metals (4 million tonnes, 6.2%), and mineral building materials (3 million tonnes, 4.7%). Cargo exports decreased 6% to 6.18 million tonnes in September 2024 month-on-month.

Exports accounted for 49% of all shipments by Ukrainian Railways in September versus 36% in the same period of 2023.

Grain shipments rose 62.9% to 25.78 million tonnes in January-September 2024. A total of 21.8 million tonnes of grain were transported to ports, a 2.3-fold increase from the same period the year before. Meanwhile, exports via overland border crossings dropped 38.5% to 3.89 million tonnes.

In addition, September saw a 13.2% decline in grain exports to 2.28 million tonnes month-on-month. In September 2024, grain shipments to ports fell 15.8% to 1.9 million tonnes, but transportation to overland border crossings grew by 3% to 378,740 tonnes.

Meanwhile, iron and manganese ore exports by rail doubled to 25.18 million tonnes in January-September 2024.

Ore shipments to ports surged by 11-fold to 13.88 million tonnes in January-September 2024. At the same time, ore transportation to overland border crossing dropped 2.8% to 11.3 million tonnes over this period.

Ore exports rose 1.7% to 2.36 million tonnes in September 2024 month-on-month. Shipments to ports increased 18.4% to 1.31 million tonnes, but shipments to overland border crossings declined 13.6% to 1.04 million tonnes.

As previously reported, cargo transportation by Ukrainian Railways increased 24.3% to 118.04 million tonnes in January-August 2024 year-on-year.
