All schools in Russia to have WiFi by 2030 - minister
MOSCOW. Oct 3 (Interfax) - All schools in Russia will have WiFi within the next five years, Russian Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media Minister Maksut Shadayev said at a meeting of the State Duma's Information Policy Committee on Thursday.
The creation of school WiFi networks, which connect a teacher to the Internet in the classroom and make it possible to show online educational content, began during the previous national project, Shadayev said.
"We can see that traffic in schools connected to WiFi has tripled. This means that the use of online educational resources and services has intensified in the teaching process. We are expecting 37% of all buildings to have WiFi networks by 2027 and plan to finalize the work by the end of 2030," he said.
A program aimed at providing teachers with tablets with secure Russian software will be implemented at the same time, Shadayev said.
"We are thus finalizing the formation of basic infrastructure. I mean fast Internet in school, WiFi access in every classroom, and a secure tablet based on a Russian operating system, which will enable a teacher to maintain an electronic journal and display electronic educational content from this tablet," he said.
A program connecting schools to the Internet has been completed, Shadayev said.
"Please be informed that we connected all schools and colleges to the Internet during the previous project. More than 98% of them have optic lines, which allow for flexible scaling of access speeds in specific schools," he said.
