Law banning LGBT propaganda in Georgia takes effect
TBILISI. Oct 3 (Interfax) - Georgian parliament speaker Shalva Papuashvili signed a bill banning propaganda of the LGBT community, banned in Russia, into law on Thursday.
"I signed the bill into law after [President] Salome Zourabichvili refused to do so. This law does not reflect current, temporary, changing ideas and ideologies. It is based on common sense, historical experience and centuries-old Christian, Georgian and European values," Papuashvili said.
The Georgian parliament passed the bill on family values and protection of minors by a majority of votes on September 17.
The Georgian parliament's adoption of the bill banning LGBT propaganda caused a negative reaction from the Georgian opposition and foreign politicians, who claimed it was targeting a part of Georgian society.
