Malaysian PM to visit BRICS summit, looks forward to Putin's visit to ASEAN summit in 2025

HONG KONG. Sept 4 (Interfax) - Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has said following a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin that he accepted an invitation to visit the upcoming BRICS summit in Kazan on October 22-24.

"I was pleased to accept his gracious invitation for Malaysia to participate in the forthcoming BRICS Summit in Kazan," Ibrahim wrote on his Telegram channel on Wednesday.

The event is important for Malaysia as it would mark a significant step toward its ultimate goal of joining BRICS, he said.

Malaysia filed an application to join BRICS in July 2024.

The Malaysian national news agency Bernama said Ibrahim expected Putin to visit an ASEAN summit in 2025, when Malaysia is to chair the organization.

Putin said earlier he hoped that, during Malaysia's presidency, new areas for cooperation within the ASEAN framework would be found.

Putin and Ibrahim met in Vladivostok on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF).
