Russia attains second place among suppliers of peas to India in H1 2024 - Agroexport center
MOSCOW. Sept 4 (Interfax) - India imported 727,000 tonnes of Russian peas in the first half of this year, thereby attaining second place among countries supplying peas to the Indian market, the Agriculture Ministry's Agroexport center said.
India's customs data cited by Agroexport indicate that the volume of peas supplied to India totaled 2 million tonnes at $979 million in H1 2024. Imports of Russian peas totaled 727,000 tonnes at $352 million for the period.
Canada is the leader in supplies of peas to India at 878,600 tonnes, and Turkey is third at 228,500 tonnes.
According to the report, India in December last year permitted duty-free import of yellow peas until March 2024 in order to reduce prices for legumes. The period to import peas without paying duty was then extended until October 31.
Russia harvested 4.7 million tonnes of peas in 2023 against 3.6 million tonnes in 2022.
