Tajik president invites Kuwait to invest in renewable energy sector
DUSHANBE. Aug 22 (Interfax) - Tajik President Emomali Rahmon has noted the significance of investment in the country's renewable energy sector at a meeting with Director General of the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development Walid Al-Bahar.
"Tajikistan constantly focuses on strengthening and expanding relations of friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation with the State of Kuwait and views Kuwait as an important partner," Rahmon said.
The conversation highlighted Tajikistan's cooperation advancing with the Fund in funding important infrastructure projects, in particular the construction of highways and the rehabilitation of electricity and irrigation networks.
"The president noted that Tajikistan is currently undertaking measures required to provide the population and the region with 'green energy' and develop a 'green economy'. In this regard, the urgency of attracting Kuwaiti investments in renewable energy, especially hydropower, as well as improving the electricity infrastructure was emphasized," the Tajik presidential press service said.
Rahmon said in a speech at the third Voice of the Global South Summit last week that Tajikistan produces 98% of its electricity from hydropower resources, that is, from renewable sources.
"In terms of percentage, we rank sixth in the world in terms of green energy production. We have decided to raise this figure to 100% by 2032, this means fully establishing electricity production from 'green' energy resources and turning Tajikistan into a 'green' country by 2037," Rahmon said.
