Zelensky proposes Rada pass bill on multiple citizenship
MOSCOW. Aug 8 (Interfax) - Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has introduced legislation on multiple citizenship for the Verkhovna Rada's consideration.
The parliament has registered a bill amending a number of Ukrainian laws upholding the right to acquire and retain Ukrainian citizenship, Ukrainian media have reported.
An explanatory note to the bill says that it is aimed at updating the legal regulation of matters pertaining to Ukrainian citizenship, taking into account the necessity of ensuring Ukraine's national security and national interests.
The bill is also intended to facilitate the procedure of acquiring Ukrainian citizenship and updating the regulation of the legal status of foreigners and people without citizenship who are serving or have served under a contract with the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the State Special Transport Service, or the Ukrainian National Guard, or are spouses or children of such persons.
It says the legislation should provide more opportunities to some categories of foreigners or people without citizenship to acquire Ukrainian citizenship.
The bill makes an exception for Russian citizens, who will not be eligible for multiple citizenship in Ukraine.
