Dam erosion kills 1 in Russia's Karelia - local administration

PETROZAVODSK. July 29 (Interfax) - One body has been discovered in the area of a washed-out dam on the White Sea-Baltic Canal in the Segezha district of Russia's internal republic of Karelia, Artur Parfenchikov, the head of the republic's administration, said on Monday.

"One dead person, presumably a construction worker, has been discovered visually, and rescue workers are currently making their way towards the site," Parfenchikov wrote on social media.

Nine people were listed as missing immediately after the accident, and seven of them, including three children, were later accounted for. The search for two missing women is still underway.

Three ambulance teams from the Segezha District Hospital are working at the scene, the Karelian Health Ministry said.

As of 1:00 p.m. Monday, a 74-year-old man, a 14-year-old boy, and a 16-year-old girl were provided with medical aid, the ministry told Interfax.

"Information on the rest of those injured has yet to be clarified. Healthcare specialists are working at the scene," it said.

As reported, a cofferdam between floodgates 10 and 11 of the White Sea-Baltic Canal in Nadvoitsy was washed out at 6:34 a.m. on Monday. The local administration declared a state of emergency in the Segezha district.
