Equipment from old European power plants can cover up to 10% of Ukraine's needs in repairing damaged generating assets - DTEK head

MOSCOW. July 26 (Interfax) - In repairing damaged Ukrainian thermal power plants, the power holding DTEK can cover around 10% of its want for hardware with equipment from old European power plants, DTEK Executive Director Dmitry Sakharuk said.

"We're working together with more than ten countries, but this would be around 5% to 10% of the amount required by the end of the year, just isolated cases," Ukrainian media quoted Sakharuk as saying in comments on the sidelines of a conference dealing with the future of the Ukrainian power sector in Kiev a few days ago.

The search for equipment fit for use at Ukrainian power plants involves quite a lot of problems, Sakharuk said.

"Most of the power plants are not operating, this equipment is outdated, it's not being used, and therefore, even if plants can give it for free, far from everything can serve its purpose, and we cannot take away everything," Sakharuk said, adding that all this assistance is distributed by the Energy Ministry.

Not all old foreign power plants agree to give their hardware for free, as many of them are in private or private-public ownership, and "every owner has its own decisions," he said.

Commenting on foreign financing for the restoration of Ukraine's power infrastructure, Sakharuk said its volume has been quite modest for now.

As reported with reference to Sakharuk, DTEK planned to repair 60% to 70% of power generating assets damaged since March 2024 unless new damage is caused. By the end of 2024, DTEK plans to invest UAH 4 billion in restoring power generation in addition to the UAH 1.3 billion it has already invested.

The overall needs for financial resources to restore power generation amount to $350 million to $400 million, which is three times as much as it required last year, when DTEK restored ten generating units by investing $110 million of its own funds. As of January 2022, the installed capacity of DTEK Energo's thermal power generating assets amounted to 13.3 GW.
