Russia's cooperation with ASEAN countries deepening - Lavrov
VIENTIANE. July 26 (Interfax) - Coordination in security issues between Russia and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) members has deepened and their economic ties have been developing positively, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.
"Our relations have taken on a truly comprehensive nature over these more than three decades. Focused work has been in progress to deepen coordination in politics and security, in counteracting modern-day challenges and threats. We also see positive dynamics in practical areas, including the economy, energy, agriculture and education," Lavrov said at a meeting in the Russia-ASEAN format.
Russia is confident that "the ASEAN-centric architecture based on inclusivity, equality and due consideration for the interests of all countries must remain the foundation of security and sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region," he said.
It is also important that Russia has become an ASEAN digital partner, he said.
Laos holds the ASEAN presidency in 2024 and hosts the annual series of the organization's ministerial and post ministerial meetings and meetings with the ASEAN dialogue partners this week.
ASEAN includes Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Brunei, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Myanmar. East Timor is in the process of accession to ASEAN.
