Ukrainian Border Service admits attempts to illegally cross Western borders recorded every day
MOSCOW. July 25 (Interfax) - Attempts to cross Ukraine's western borders persist, and most of such instances have been recorded on the borders with Moldova and Romania, Ukrainian State Border Service spokesperson Andrei Demchenko said.
"Attempts to illegally cross the border have persisted lately. Such instances have been recorded particularly at crossing points, where [violators] try to use fake documents, or hide inside vehicles, or try to bribe State Border Service inspectors," Ukrainian media quoted Demchenko as saying at the Media Center Ukraine in Kiev.
However, most of the attempts to illegally cross the border have been made outside of official crossing points, he said.
"We haven't seen a sharp surge lately, but unfortunately, the number of attempts to illegally cross the border hasn't declined, either. The situation may differ depending on a particular day, and we detain more violators on certain days and fewer on others, but such attempts are actually made every day," Demchenko said.
He also listed sections where attempts to illegally cross the border have been recorded more often than anywhere else.
"The hottest directions are the borders with Moldova and Romania. Such attempts have also been made at other sections, including the borders with Hungary, Slovakia, and Poland, but there've been considerably fewer of them," he said.
