Rosatom, Republic of the Congo sign memoranda of cooperation on nuclear energy, hydropower

MOSCOW. July 18 (Interfax) - Russia's Rosatom state corporation and the Republic of the Congo have signed memoranda of cooperation on the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and in the field of hydropower, the company's media center said.

The corresponding documents were signed following Rosatom Deputy General Director Nikolai Spassky's visit to the country.

An intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in using nuclear energy for peaceful purposes was signed with the Republic of the Congo in 2019.

As for hydropower, Russian Ambassador to the Republic of the Congo Georgy Chepik told reporters in spring 2023 that Rosatom's subsidiary RASU had developed a project to build small hydropower plants in the country, the total capacity of which at the first stage will be 500 megawatts.

The capacities may be trippled if the project is implemented successfully, Chepik said.
