Lithuania's LTG Cargo Buys 500 grain railcars from Ukraine
MOSCOW. July 12 (Interfax) - LTG Cargo, part of Lithuanian Railways Group (LTG), has acquired 500 railcars for grain from Ukraine, Ukrainian media cited the freight railway operator as saying in a statement.
"LTG Cargo has purchased all railcars from Ukrainian producers, thus strengthening cooperation," the statement said.
The acquisition will enable the company to transport an additional 1.2 million tonnes of cargo a year.
The first railcars are expected to arrive in Lithuania within the next couple of months, while the main batch of 300 railcars will be delivered before the end of 2024. Another 200 carriages will be delivered in 2025.
LTG Cargo has a fleet of around 1,200 grain carriers.
LTG Group, which owns LTG Cargo, seeks to reduce its carriage of freight by road and enhance transportation by rail. The acquisition of railcars from Ukraine will allow the Lithuanian company to cut the number of trips by trucks with grain across Lithuania by 45,000 over one year.
Grain transportation currently accounts for about 13%-14% of all cargo volumes and is rising every year.
