UN plays important role in Tajikistan's development - Rahmon to Guterres

DUSHANBE. July 5 (Interfax) - The United Nations plays an important role in the implementation of Tajikistan's priority programs, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon told UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, as quoted by the Tajik presidential press service.

"Tajikistan supports the UN effort towards sustainable development, stronger peace and security, development of science and technology, use of innovations, and intensified cooperation in digitalization matters," Rahmon said.

Guterres underlined a significant input of Tajikistan in the resolution of global problems. He said that despite being a small country, Tajikistan has a large influence and plays an outstanding role in the work of the UN and the international community as a whole.

The sides exchanged views on ways to prevent global threats and challenges facing mankind.

The achievement of sustainable development targets, the implementation of the Dushanbe Declaration adopted at the third high-level conference on the Water for Sustainable Development International Decade for Action, and the fulfillment of the Tajik national development strategy for the period until 2030, which aims, in particular, to solve water and climate problems and preserve glaciers were high on the agenda.

The sides pointed to the need for reforming the global financial system to ensure the regular, long-term financing of the achievement of sustainable development goals and resolution of climate change problems.

It was stressed that Tajikistan fully supports the international effort to mitigate the climate change fallout.

Speaking of security matters, the sides supported a joint response to the mounting threats of terrorism, extremism and transborder organized crime, including drug trafficking, as well as other global risks.
