Zelensky speaks with Gambian president, plans to extend Grain From Ukraine in African, Caribbean countries
MOSCOW. July 2 (Interfax) - Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has had a conversation with Gambian President Adama Barrow.
"It's important for us to remain a key guarantor of food security for Africa and the world," Ukrainian media quoted Zelensky as saying in a video address.
Ukraine intends to extend its Grain From Ukraine humanitarian program for supplying Ukrainian foodstuffs to Central and East Africa, Caribbean countries, and other regions, media quoted Ukrainian presidential office chief Andrei Yermak as saying on his social account.
Ukraine has shipped over 220,000 tonnes of agricultural produce, including wheat, wheat flour, and split peas, to ten African and Asian countries since the fall of 2022, he said.
In addition, Ukrainian foodstuffs were supplied to Sudan, Nigeria, Mauritania, Djibouti, Mozambique, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2024, and some humanitarian shipments are currently on their way to Malawi and other countries, he said.
"Ukraine plans to extend the program to other parts of the world. Possible shipments to Haiti, Chad, Cameroon, Tanzania, and other countries are under consideration now," Yermak said.
