Secondary market for passenger cars in Russia continues growth in May despite holidays
MOSCOW. June 17 (Interfax) - The Russian market for used passenger cars grew 2.1% year-on-year in May 2024 to 512,900 units, topping April's results by 0.7%, Autostat reported.
Therefore, the growth reported in April, when 509,500 used cars were sold (+2.8% YoY and +1.5% MoM), continues.
Russian Lada still leads in its share of the secondary market, with 130,500 of these cars purchased used last month. Japanese Toyota still holds second place, having sold 52,200 units. Then come Korean brands Kia and Hyundai (29,400 and 27,700 units, respectively). Japanese Nissan closes the top five with 23,800 units sold.
Six of the top ten brands saw increased resale sales in May versus April, with Honda showing the strongest growth (+2.7%). However, Toyota (-0.7%), Nissan (-1.3%), Volkswagen (-0.6%) and Renault (-0.4%) saw month-on-month declines. At the same time, in annual comparison, only three brands had positive dynamics in May: Lada (+21.2%), Kia (+2.6%) and Renault (+0.6%). The rest declined, with Toyota dropping the most (-12.3%).
The most popular used passenger car model in May was the Lada 2107 sedan, maintaining its leadership for the fourth month in a row. Russians bought 12,300 Lada Sevens in May. The hatchback Lada 2114 Samara-2 (10,900 units) remained in second place, followed by the "Koreans," Kia Rio (10,600 units) and Hyundai Solaris (10,200 units). Ford Focus also entered the secondary market top-five in May, selling 9,300 units.
Only two models showed a decrease in May resales versus April: the Lada 2107 sedan (-0.2%) and the Lada 4x4 SUV (-1.9%). Three models decreased YoY: the Ford Focus (-13.7%), Toyota Corolla (-8.5%) and Toyota Camry (-13.5%). The most noticeable monthly growth in resales was for the Lada 2170 Priora sedan (+5.4%), while the most significant increase in annual terms came from the Lada Seven (+42%).
The Russian secondary passenger car market totaled 2.25 million vehicles (-0.1%) in 5M 2024. Of the ten most popular brands, only Lada has grown since the beginning of the year (+14.8%). Among Lada models, six showed growth, led by the Seven (+36.5%). The strongest decline was observed for Ford (-12.4%) and Toyota Camry (-15%).
