Japan to provide Ukraine with another $4.5 bln, pledges support for ten years
MOSCOW. June 14 (Interfax) - Japan will provide Ukraine with $4.5 billion in 2024, according to an agreement reached by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Italy.
"This year, Japan will provide our state with $4.5 billion and will continue to help throughout the ten-year term of the agreement. In total, the assistance that Japan has provided since March 2022 will amount to more than $12 billion," Ukrainian media reported, quoting a statement by the Ukrainian president's office.
The document sets out the main areas of long-term support from Japan in security and defense, humanitarian assistance, recovery and reconstruction. It provides for the transfer of non-lethal military equipment to Ukraine, taking into account Japan's constitutional restrictions.
Japan will, according to the president's office, provide treatment to injured Ukrainian servicemen, cooperate with Ukraine in intelligence and protection of classified information, the protection and restoration of critical infrastructure, cyber and information security, and ensuring free navigation and the security of sea routes. Japan will also assist with the recovery and reconstruction of Ukraine by involving the private sector and Japanese government agencies.
A separate block of the agreement concerns cooperation in industry. The countries will explore opportunities to develop Ukraine's industrial sector, including by creating joint ventures.
