Russia's Kuzbass cuts coal output 5.1% in 5M

KEMEROVO. June 14 (Interfax) - Russia's Kemerovo region, home to the coal-rich Kuznetsk coal basin or Kuzbass, mined 87.1 million tonnes of coal in January-May 2024, down 5.1% from 91.8 million tonnes a year previously, the region's Coal Industry Ministry said on its website.

This included 17.2 million tonnes in May, down 8.5% year-on-year.

Deep mines produced 30.7 million tonnes in 5M 2024, compared with 30.3 million tonnes, and open-cast mines 56.4 million tonnes, down from 61.5 million tonnes.

The 5M total included 28 million tonnes of coking coal, down from 28.2 million tonnes, and 59.1 million tonnes of steam coal, down from 63.6 million tonnes.
