Ukraine plans to build up to 1 GW of gas-fired maneuverable generating capacity in 2024 with partners' aid

MOSCOW. June 11 (Interfax) - Ukraine expects with the aid of partners to build up to 1 GW of gas-fired maneuverable generating capacity in 2024 and another 4 GW in the coming years, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said in a speech at the Ukraine Recovery Conference (URC2024) in Berlin on Tuesday.

One of the essential components for the normal operation of Ukraine's energy sector is efficient and decentralized maneuverable gas-fired generating facilities, which are capable of rapidly addressing energy shortages, he was quoted as saying by the Ukrainian media.

"In this industry, European companies and, in particular, German ones are technological leaders. Right in this industry, we have a clear plan to build up to 1 GW of capacity already this year," he said.

At the same time, "we need to talk not only about the future, we need to solve problems today," Zelensky said

"Today [it is needed to build up to 1 GW of capacity] and another 4 GW in the coming years," Zelensky said.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said at the conference that the Ukrainian energy issue is one of the core issues for Kiev's partners.

"The energy issue is one of the main issues on the agenda for us. [...] So far we have managed to keep the energy supply in working order," he said.

Germany is assisting with the repair and protection of power substations and grids, as well as with investment in decarbonization, energy efficiency and decentralization of the energy system.

"When we talk about rebuilding Ukraine, we are talking about rebuilding the country as a future member of the European Union," Scholz added.

As previously reported with reference to European Union Ambassador to Ukraine Katarina Mathernova, the capacity of disabled energy facilities in Ukraine was estimated at 9.2 MW as of early June.
