Rahmon discusses climate change, green energy with UN under-secretary-general for economic, social affairs

DUSHANBE. June 11 (Interfax) - Tajik President Emomali Rahmon has received United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Li Junhua, the Tajik presidential press service said.

"Owing to effective cooperation between Tajikistan and the United Nations, especially your department, our initiatives have won broad support in the international arena. The adoption by the General Assembly of ten resolutions on water and climate confirm this," Rahmon said at a meeting with Li on the sidelines of the 3rd international conference on the International Decade for Action on Water for Sustainable Development, 2018-2028 currently ongoing in Dushanbe.

Rahmon and Li discussed the melting of glaciers, climate change and its negative implications, environmental protection, and ways to enhance green energy potential.

"Tajikistan supports efforts by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs to bolster multilateral cooperation on science, technology, and innovations to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals," he said.

The parties reaffirmed their willingness to promote cooperation on digitalization, science and education, healthcare, culture, and social support.

They also shared opinions on the importance of adopting global initiatives, such as the declaration of 2025 as the International Year of Glaciers' Preservation and the establishment of an international trust fund to promote the preservation of glaciers.
