Tajikistan plans to complete switch to green energy by 2032 - president

DUSHANBE. June 11 (Interfax) - Tajikistan plans to complete its transition to green energy by 2032, President Emomali Rahmon said.

"We are doubling our efforts as part of the transition to a green economy, and water resources play a key role in achieving this goal. More than 98% of Tajikistan's electricity is produced by the country's hydropower resources. We intend to bring this figure to 100% by 2032, i.e. ensure electricity generation fully from green energy resources," Rahmon said at the opening ceremony of the third High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action 'Water for Sustainable Development, 2018-2028'.

Another goal of the authorities is to turn Tajikistan into a "green country" by 2037, he said.

"In this context, along with the full use of renewable energy sources, we have adopted a natural greening program for the country until 2040, which will see more than two billion seedlings planted during this period," Rahmon said.

The Tajik government also gives special attention to cross-border cooperation in water management, Rahmon said, reaffirming his country's readiness to further promote regional cooperation within Central Asia and constructive dialogue on solving key water-related issues.
