Gazprom signs contracts with Kazakhstan to transit gas to Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan until 2040
ST. PETERSBURG. June 7 (Interfax) - Gazprom has signed contracts with Kazakhstan to transit gas to Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, an Interfax correspondent reported from the signing ceremony at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) 2024.
The contracts with Kazakh gas company QazaqGaz are valid from 2025 to 2040.
The transit will be organized by expanding a specially designated route based on the Central Asia - Center gas pipeline system, and carrying out other projects to develop gas transportation capacity in Kazakhstan, Gazprom said in a statement.
Contracts were also signed with Gazprom Export LLC for gas supplies to the north and south of Kyrgyzstan. Long-term contracts to supply natural gas to Kyrgyzstan were signed by Gazprom Export LLC and Gazprom Kyrgyzstan LLC. Deliveries under the new contracts will be carried out in 2025-2040.
Contracts were also signed with Gazprom Export LLC to supply gas to the north and south of Kyrgyzstan, and contracts for gas supplies with the Kyrgyz companies OJSC Electric Stations and Bishkekteploenergo.
Additionally, Gazprom CEO and executive board chairman Alexei Miller has signed an action plan with Kazakhstan's First Deputy Prime Minister Roman Sklyar to boost Russian gas supplies through Kazakhstan to Uzbekistan via the Central Asia-Center (CAC)-4 gas pipeline.
Miller held a working meeting with Uzbek Deputy Prime Minister Jamshid Khodjaev and Uzbek Energy Minister Jurabek Mirzamakhmudov during the SPIEF. "The parties discussed relevant issues pertaining to their cooperation. Specifically, the meeting addressed current and potential Russian gas supplies to the Republic of Uzbekistan," Gazprom said.
Gas consumption in Uzbekistan has, following a period of robust growth, has begun to decline in recent years due to a drop in production. The country became a net importer of natural gas in 2023.
Supplies of Russian gas to Uzbekistan through the territory of Kazakhstan began in October 2023. Agreements have been signed with countries in the region to expand strategic cooperation.
Gazprom believes supplies to the region in the long term will facilitate the dynamic development of the economies of Central Asia.
