Moscow backs project for Belarus-Pakistan corridor through Russia, C. Asia - deputy PM

NESVIZH, Belarus. June 4 (Interfax) - Russia supports the Belarus-Russia-Kazakhstan-Uzbekistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan transport corridor project, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk said, adding that Tashkent is also interested in it.

"Uzbekistan, an EAEU observer, seeks to develop the international transport corridor. This is a very serious project, which has been discussed for years but is increasingly talked about today, as opportunities to implement it present themselves," Overchuk told reporters after a meeting of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council in the Belarusian town of Nesvizh.

"Russia supports the project. We realize that its implementation will give Russia a better chance to enter the market of such a densely populated country as Pakistan, of course, in addition to India and Afghanistan," Overchuk said.
