Three sites for new shipyard being considered in Primorye - Russian minister
MOSCOW. June 4 (Interfax) - Several promising sites are being considered for the construction of a new shipyard in the Far East, Minister for the Far East and Arctic Development Alexei Chekunkov said in an interview with Interfax.
"The plan today is to build a new shipyard in the Primorye Territory. There are different promising sites, near Nakhodka, in Slavyanka, in Zarubino," Chekunkov said.
"In any case, we are speaking about a shipyard on a scale comparable to that of the Zvezda Shipyard. We stand ready to provide support in terms of transport infrastructure, in building a railway and roads, engineer infrastructure if need be," he said.
"The shipyard will consume more than 50 MW of electricity, over one million cubic meters of water. Housing infrastructure, including rental accommodation, will have to be built. According to preliminary calculations, the facility will have a workforce of 8,000 people. The new shipyard will focus on creating an icebreaker fleet for the development of the Northern Sea Route," Chekunkov said.
In May, Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov said that a final decision on the construction of a new shipyard would be made before the end of 2024.
