Kazakhstan studying Azerbaijan's proposal to use Baku-Supsa oil pipeline - embassy

BAKU. June 3 (Interfax) - Kazakhstan is studying Azerbaijan's proposal to use the Baku-Supsa oil pipeline; supplies in this direction will depend on commercial conditions, the Kazakh Embassy in Baku said.

The issue was discussed at a meeting between the Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Azerbaijan Alim Bayel and the President of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) Rovshan Najaf at the end of last week, the embassy said.

"Currently, the parties are exploring the possibilities of further increasing volumes. Kazakhstan is also studying Azerbaijan's proposal to use the Baku-Supsa oil pipeline. Supplies in this direction will depend on commercial conditions," the statement says.

During the meeting, Bayel said that shipments of Kazakh oil began in 2023 through the territory of Azerbaijan via the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline. There were 1.057 million tonnes of Kazakh oil shipped from the port of Aktau in 2023 bound for Azerbaijan for subsequent export via the BTC.

"This figure was 490,000 tonnes for January-April, 2024," the diplomat said.

At the meeting, there was an exchange of views on the prospects for further cooperation in the oil and gas sector.

"In particular, the Azerbaijani side is showing interest and considering the possibility of investing in Kazakh oil fields," the statement says.

In turn, KazTransOil reported that the shipment of Kazakh oil from the Tengiz field to Azerbaijan for export via the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline reached 490,000 tonnes in January-April 2024, a 3.5-fold increase versus the same period in 2023.

KazTransOil plans to export up to 1.5 million tonnes of oil from Tengiz via the BTC by the end of 2024.
